For millions nationwide, the daily trek for water--it averages 5 km for many villages--is growing longer and harder. This boy in Rajasthan winds his way home carrying his precious cargo in two leather bags draped across his donkey. State governments have repeatedly ignored simple and cheap water-harvesting methods, despite the fact that many villages across the arid western belt have transformed their lives by building their own little check dams and percolations ponds.
